Olana Janfa was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and emigrated to Norway as a teenager before moving to Australia in 2015. He began painting in Australia as a way to reconnect with his Ethiopian culture, and to create a deeper sense of home. Olana's bold, character-driven style and unique approach to colour is influenced by the traditional Ethiopian Orthodox art that he was surrounded by during his childhood in Addis. His work draws on a range of influences, often featuring images of women and children, biblical references and nods to his ethnic Oromo heritage. He also draws inspiration from reggae and hip hop lyrics, sport and popular culture. He paints on canvas, timber and various recycled and found materials using acrylic, oil and pastel.
